GRANTS HELP WOUNDED VETS PURCHASE VEHICLES

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides eligible wounded veterans with assistance in purchasing vehicles and adaptive equipment for the vehicles through two grant programs. In addition, veterans are trained through the VA Driver’s Rehabilitation Program to learn how to safely operate their vehicles. For information visit www.vetsfirst.org.

 

SCI PATIENTS, NURSES AND CAREGIVERS NEEDED FOR STUDY

The Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center is recruiting individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) as well as their caregivers and nurses to participate in a research study. Participants, who will receive $75, must be 18 or older and have the ability to communicate on the telephone in English. Interviews will last approximately 60 minutes. GAIT TRAINING STUDY

Columbia University Medical Center in Manhattan is looking for participants with Spinal Cord Injury that are 18 or older to walk on a treadmill while testing your balance. They have create a device called the Pelvic Assist Device (TPAD). The purpose of the device is to find out if gait training based on unpredictable disturbances can help people with spinal cord injuries. The study involves 2 hour sessions---you can participate in as many as you like. Participants will complete a questionnaire, undergo balance and cognitive tests, and walk on a treadmill for about 40 minutes wearing reflective markers that record motion using a camera system. ACCESSIBILITY SECTION ADDED TO ADA WEBSITE

The Department of Justice (DOJ) recently added a new accessible technology section to its Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) website. This section addresses how the ADA applies to websites, electronic book readers, online courses, point-of-sale devices and other technologies. It includes technical guidance on accessible technology, as well as the DOJ’s enforcement efforts.

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS AND GRADUATES Applications are open for the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) 2019 summer internship program. They place college students and graduates who have any type of disability with Congressional offices, federal agencies, nonprofits and for-profits in Washington, D.C. Each intern is matched with a mentor and receives a stipend, accessible housing, and transportation to and from Washington, D.C. The deadline to apply is Nov. 5.
