SPEECH SOUNDS---STUTTERING

The following are common terms used by speech-language pathologists to analyze speech fluency:

Repetition

A repeated syllable or phrase (Can I p-p-play now?” Or “Can I play-play-play now?”)

Prolongation

A lengthening of one sound (“I wwwwant that”)

Block

An empty and tense space in speech when the desired sound cannot be made

Filler/Interjection

A word used to get past the stuttering point (e.g. um, er, like)

Secondary/Associative Behaviors

Physical habits that develop in order to prevent or stop the stuttering from occurring (e.g. eye blinking, mouth quivering, fist clenching)
