Tel Aviv University researchers discovered that at least some PVS patients are aware of what’s happening around them—and can respond on an emotional level. MRI imaging showed that the visual processing region of the brain was activated by familiar photos of family and friends, though not by unfamiliar photos. The Times of Israel sys the discovery could lead to new treatment and even rehabilitation.
