Also known as pink disease, Bilderbeck’s, Selter’s, Swift’s, and Swift-Feer disease.  It is a painful nervous system disorder appearing in children chronically  exposed to mercury or other heavy metals.  Symptoms are pinkish discoloration of the hands and feet, tingling or itching of the skin, burning pain, edema (swelling), shedding of the skin, ruddy complexion, profuse sweating, tachycardia (abnormally fast heartbeat), excess salivation, and hypertension (high blood pressure).  There may also be hair and nail loss, red lips, dental problems, kidney dysfunction, and neuropsychiatric problems.  Treatment is by removing  the child from exposure  to the metals and chelation therapy to reduce stores of the heavy metals.
