Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome

 

                                                              

 

        

A genetic x-linked immune system disorder which is a combined deficiency that causes a characteristic skin rash, bleeding due to low platelet, and recurrent bacterial and viral infections.  There is also an increased risk of cancer and autoimmune disease.  It results from a defect in defect in a protein that regulates the cell structure and results in defective platelets, B cells, and T cells.  Treatment includes management of bleeding and infections and maintenance of adequate platelet counts.  Bone marrow transplants may be used.
