Also known as ruptured or herniated disc.  The disc, a flat cushion in the spine made up of a gelatin like center surrounded by fibrous material, separate the stacked vertebrae.  With age or injury, the discs can flatten, tearing the fibrous outer section and pushing the gelatin like substance through the vertebrae.  Symptoms include back or leg pain.  Treatment includes rest, medication, and physical therapy.  A small percentage require surgery.
