Sjogren's Sndrome

 

                                                              

 

An autoimmune disease with infiltration and destruction of glands of the body.  It is more common in women than men.  Typically, the parotid, lacrimal, and salivary glands are affected, causing gland enlargement and dry mouth and eyes (sicca syndrome).  It can also affect the joints, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, or nerves, and there is elevated risk of lymphoma.  It often occurs together with other autoimmune diseases such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.  Treatment is aimed at controlling symptoms.  Immunosuppressive drugs may be given.
