Sixth Nerve Palsy

 

                                                             

    

An acquired condition causing a weakness of the nerve that supplies the lateral rectus muscle, which moves the eye outward.  It can be caused by certain viral illnesses or head trauma.  Symptoms are gradual or sudden onset of eye crossing, double vision, and an inability of the eye to move outward.  It generally improves over the course of several months, but may require surgery.
