Renal Kidney Failure

The inability of the kidneys to adequately remove water and waste products from the bloodstream.  Acute kidney failure is the sudden onset of kidney failure.  It may be treatable and reversible if caught in time.  Chronic kidney disease leads to gradual deterioration of kidney function that may become irreversible.   Symptoms may not show until significant kidney scarring has occurred.  Treatment includes hemodialysis in which blood is removed from the body and sent to an artificial filter before being returned to the body,  or peritoneal dialysis, a procedure in which the abdominal membrane is used to remove water and waste products.   Another option is kidney transplant.
