Reading Disorders

Reading disorders are the most common type of learning disorder.  People may have difficulty reading letters and remembering what they mean (dyslexia).  They have difficulty understanding the sounds and letter groups that make up words.  Because of these problems, individuals with reading disorders often have poor reading comprehension.  Symptoms of a reading disorder include difficulty identifying groups of letters, failure to correctly identify the sounds that different letters make, reversals and other errors involving letter position, chaotic spelling, difficulty with breaking letters into syllables, failure to recognize words, hesitant reading aloud, and word by word reading rather than contextual reading.  Once a reading order is diagnosed, treatment focuses on increasing recognition of the sounds and meaning of letters and words or phonics training.   Next is working on the ability to understand words and sentences, to remember what has been read, and to learn how to study more efficiently.  See learning disorders
