Keratoconus

An endothelial dystrophy in which the normally round dome shaped cornea progressively thins, causing a cone like bulge to develop, resulting in severe optical deterioration.  Early symptoms are slight blurring and distortion of vision and sensitivity to glare and light.  The condition progresses for 10-20 years, and then slow or stabilize.  Treatment begins with use of rigid contact lenses to provide the best possible vision.  CR-3 or corneal collagen cross linking riboflavin is a noninvasive method to strengthen connective tissue within the eye.  In severe cases, corneal transplant may be required.
