Hyperthyroidism

The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that helps set the rate of metabolism (energy use) in the body.  Hyperthyroidism is caused by the body producing too much thyroid hormone.  Symptoms include insomnia, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, weakness, heat sensitivity, increased perspiration, nervousness, itchy skin, fine, thin, or brittle hair, changes in the eyes, and enlarged thyroid (goiter).  Treatment includes anti thyroid drugs, radioactive iodine, or surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland.
