Hypertensive Retinopathy

A disease of the retina caused by high blood pressure, atherosclerosis (narrowing caused by fatty deposits) of retinal blood vessels, and retinal hemorrhages.  The disease can cause “cotton wool” spots on the retina.  As it progresses, there may be hemorrhaging and swelling of the optic disc.  Progression and symptoms can be controlled by lowering blood pressure.
