Fragile-X syndrome

 

                  


Also known as Martin-Bell syndrome or Marker X syndrome.  An inherited problem caused by a duplication of material on the x chromosome.  Males are more fully affected.  Symptoms include deficit hyperactivity disorder, behavioral disorders, mental retardation, large body size, and a characteristic large nose and jaw and long ears.  .  The majority of patients will have normal early development with subsequent decline with advancing age.  Learning disorders become more obvious with time.  Behavioral disorders can include autism, attention disorders, hand biting, shyness, speech disorders, and tactile defensiveness. Treatment focuses in maximizing the individual’s potential development.  It  includes special education, speech, occupational and physical therapies, behavioral therapy, and counseling from a psychologist.
