Dislocation

A separation of a bone where it meets the joint (an area where two or more bones come together), usually caused by sudden impact or external force to the joint.  Symptoms include deformity, discoloration, bone visibly out of place, restricted range of motion, swelling, and increased pain with use or weight bearing.  Treatment is urgent, and the bone must be restored to its place while under sedation.  After the bone is set, it is immobilized until the swelling is reduced and the ligaments have healed.  Physical therapy is then used to restore range of motion.
