Digeorge syndrome

A disorder of T cell development as the result of a genetic defect in the formation of the  thymus gland, which is the site of T cell maturation.  This affects the immune system, and predisposes the patient to many infections.  Other features include cardiac defects and low calcium levels because of malformation of other structures next to the thymus.  Treatment is by thymus transplantation to restore T cell function.
