Crohn's Disease

A chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines causing ulceration of the small and large bowels anywhere from the mouth to the anus.  It usually begins between that ages of 15 to 25.  It is more prevalent in white people of Jewish origin.  Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss.  Less common symptoms may include poor appetite, fever, night sweats, rectal pain, and bleeding.  There is currently no cure for Chron’s disease.  Treatments depend on the severity of the symptoms, and may include drugs (anti-inflammatory, cortosteroids, immune system suppressors, antibiotics, anti diarrheals, and fluid replacement), nutrition therapy, and/or surgery.
